Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra Announces 2009-10 Young Artist Competition
Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra is inviting young
musicians to enter the LSO’s 2009-10 Young Artist Competition. Funded in part by
the J. Edmund & Thelma D. Miller Fund at the Lincoln Community Foundation,
the competition allows an accomplished young musician to win a cash prize and to
perform with Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra as a featured
soloist.
To be eligible, musicians
must play an instrument and be 20 years old or younger, participate in an
audition, and submit an application with a letter of recommendation.
The winner receives the
title of LSO Young Artist Winner for the 2009-10 season, publicity exposure, a
private rehearsal and coaching from LSO Resident Conductor, Dr. Tyler White,
solo performances with the LSO’s Young People’s Concerts and Family Concert in
February 2010 at the Lied Center and O’Donnell Auditorium and a $500
cash prize.
"The Young Artist Competition is such a great opportunity for the symphony to partner with the local music educators to give their students the experience of auditioning to solo with a professional orchestra,” said Barbara Zach, executive director of LSO. “The competition also offers the winner a unique opportunity to have a coaching with our Resident Conductor and to rehearse and perform with Lincoln's Symphony Orchestra. The winner also gets the chance to become a role model for the more than 4,000 4th and 5th grade students at our Young People's Concerts."
The audition panel includes LSO Music Director Edward Polochick, Dr. White, two representatives from Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra and one local music educator. Past Young Artist Competition winners include Katherine White, oboe, from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln; Jaime Tyser, trumpet, from the University of Missouri-Kansas City; Erik Higgins, bass, from Lincoln Northeast High School; Anish Mitra, bass, from Lincoln East High School; Anne Patterson, cello, from Lincoln East High School; and Jared Fusselman, viola, and Micah Fusselman, cello, both from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Applications are available by contacting the LSO office at 476-2211 or by visiting www.lincolnsymphony.com. The application deadline is Friday, October 9, 2009. Auditions will be held Saturday, October 17, 2009.
