Exploring Lincoln Dance

By Hanna Day-Woodruff

Photo by Photosbal, Wikimedia Commons Dear Readers, it is my hope that you will benefit from my dancing struggles. You see, I'm on the hunt for a Ballroom/Latin/Swing dance venue that will gently coax my reluctant partner and I away from our awkward shuffling to some semblance of united, graceful movement. I've compiled a list of the primary venues in Lincoln and hope that those with the inclination will sample them generously.

Thus far, my efforts to persuade my significant other that dancing together will enhance our relationship have stumbled – and considering that he views dancing as public torture, it will take a special alchemy to change the situation. Our first and only series of Latin dance classes ended after session three, when the instructors added step-upon-step-upon-step, styling in ways neither of us could follow, leaving him steaming out the ears and me nearly in tears.

Nevertheless, once the dust had settled, my significant other was persuaded that other circumstances and other instructors might fare better with our four left feet (two eager, two shy), and promised to join me in sampling the variety of Ballroom and Latin dancing opportunities Lincoln has to offer.

Hence, I present my annotated list of Ballroom, Latin and Swing dancing spots in town, whether you wish to step out on your own or as a couple. This list can fill your social calendar most nights of the week, but is merely the tippy toe on the dancing shoe, as there are groups and enthusiasts and private dance instructors all over southeast Nebraska.

Note: Because Barry's celebrates special holidays and caters to the fans of the Girls and Boys State Basketball tournaments, the Lincoln Tango Club has moved the practica from Wednesdays to Tuesdays. This will be the schedule through St. Patrick's Day (March 17th). Afterward, the Tango Club will decide whether or not to keep the practica on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Star City Blog will update this information as it becomes available.

Awesome list - thanks! I didn't know so many places in town had dancing. My husband and I learned to dance over a period of 8 months back when the Pla-Mor was doing weekly swing nights. We still don't do well with dance lessons that rush through everything in 4-8 lessons, we need to work at our own pace. It can take us weeks just to get a basic step down!

I just wanted to say thank you for all the links! My boyfriend and I learned and love to dance together but we have struggled to find places to do it. By the way, do you know of any dance competitions in the area or dance offs? I have searched a bit for swing competition but so far I haven't been able to find any. You seem to be so good at finding places I thought you might know. Thanks again!
