Against the Wall Gallery Presents 'Art Gong: Sound Infinitum'

Againstthewall Against the Wall Gallery presents in August, a new exhibit entitled Art Gong: Sound Infinitum. The show will run August 6-31, 2010 with a First Friday reception on Friday, August 6 from 7-9 p.m.  The gong is an ancient sound instrument, looking much like the cymbal seen on the modern drumset, but instead, it is struck with a mallet and usually suspended. The gong has taken many forms and has been made and used by many different cultures, in one form or another, throughout the world.

The Gallery has asked Andrew Borakove, owner of Gongs Unlimited based here in Lincoln, to share a sliver of his extensive collection of gongs and bells from all over the world. There will be gongs from Nepal, China, Thailand and also from European artisans.  Gongs Unlimited imports and then sells gongs all over the globe not only to musicians, but also businesses and spiritual healers.

'Seductive Subversion: Women Pop Artists' to Open July 30 at the Sheldon

Joyce Wieland, Young Woman's Blues, 1964 The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Sheldon Museum of Art presents "Seductive Subversion: Women Pop Artists," the first major exhibition devoted to the work of female Pop artists, opening July 30.

Pop art, more than any other post-World War II art movement, is defined by a small group of American and British male artists. This show, featuring some work that hasn't been exhibited in more than 40 years, explores the important contributions of women Pop artists.

These female artists found inspiration in many of the same subjects as men, including advertising, celebrities and commercial culture, but they also brought their own experiences to the movement, creating collaborative works, emphasizing handcrafted objects and developing new mediums, such as soft sculpture.

And while the former locales offer an acceptable amount of variety, the stores themselves lack that certain “tailored-for-you” feel that usually defines the perfect shopping experience.

But before you lament that Lincoln doesn’t “do” men’s apparel, you might want to take a closer look at Anonymous.

Science Odyssey: What Made Us Human? Cooking!

Richard WranghamThe program returns from a summer break with a full-length interview with author Richard Wrangham (at left), who has an astonishing thesis. According to the Harvard biological anthropologist, what made hominids into humans was not walking or talking, but cooking. The art of putting food into the fire utterly transformed our species, Wrangham says, more than a million years ago. Wrangham's ideas are set forth in full detail in his book Catching Fire: How Cooking Made Us Human.
