UPDATED: Blog Talk Live: What is the Nebraska Digital Newspaper Project?

In the next Blog Talk Live you'll meet Katherine L. Walter, who co-directs the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Center for Digital Research in the Humanities and is professor and chair of Digital Initiatives & Special Collections in the UNL Libraries.  

From 1992-2000, Walter was principal investigator of the Nebraska Newspaper Project, a U.S. Newspaper Program project funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Division of Preservation & Access.  In collaboration with the Nebraska State Historical Society, the project team cataloged over 3,500 newspaper titles and preserved 300,000 pages of newspapers on preservation microfilm.

The Association of Nonprofit Executives (ANPE) announces the ANPE Executive of the Year Award Luncheon to honor the Nonprofit Executive of the Year for 2009. This award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, direction and vision.  In addition, the executive recognized and the nonprofit they represent each receive a cash prize of $500, for a total award of $1000.

Our city is blessed with a wide array of entertainment taking place in December for you and yours to enjoy. Tickets to many of these events make for a great pre-stocking stuffers and there is something for everyone! They can attend a hilarious comedy, tap their toes to the sounds of the season, or perhaps just get away from it all for an evening. Whatever the event, the recipient will undoubtedly look back on it fondly for years to come.

Join the Lancaster County Democratic Party at Central Committee Nov. 17

Please join the Lancaster County Democratic Party at the Central Committee, which meets on the third Thursday of every month (next meeting is this Tuesday, November 17th) at 7:00 pm at the Communication Workers of America (2448 N Street). 

Central Committee is the governing body of the Lancaster County Democratic Party and is open to the public.  Voting status is now obtainable under new guidelines.  This month our meeting is going to be structured differently.  We will be discussing the Legislative Team structure, our subcommittees, and how to get involved in the upcoming 2010 election.  Learn how you can be an active Democrat in our community and find a committee to suit your particular area of interest.

Nebraska Jazz Orchestra Announces 2010 Young Lions All-Star Band Auditions

The Nebraska Jazz Orchestra announces auditions for the 2010 Young Lions All-Star Band. Students selected for the band will perform in concert with the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra and guest artist Paul Haar on Friday, February 5, 2010 at the Cornhusker Marriott in Lincoln, NE. This is an outstanding opportunity for students to perform with some of the greatest jazz musicians in the area.

Lancaster County Democratic Party Hosts Immigration Forum

The Lancaster County Democratic Party will host a forum on Immigration on Wednesday, November 18 from 12 PM to 1 PM at the Nebraska Club, 20th floor, USB Building, 235 S 13th St., Lincoln.  Norm Pflanz of Nebraska Appleseed will be the featured speaker for this event, and the topic is “Nebraska’s Immigration Opportunity and How to Fix a Broken System.” 

The forum is open to the public and to persons of all political persuasions who can contribute to a meaningful discussion.

Barbie stood on the portico of her Malibu estate, tears streaming from her eyes, as Ken climbed into the hot pink Camaro. Buckled in the passenger seat was the scheming young Jezebel who had exacted her revenge with brutal ferocity.

“Don’t go!” shouted Barbie, petting the silky purple mane of Sugar Blossom, who whinnied and pawed the ground in distress. But Ken’s mind was made up.

“I have to, babe. I’m sorry, but I’m in love with Skipper now,” said Ken, butting heads with his new flame, their lips locking in a fateful kiss.

There would be no more double dates, no more passing glances at the soda fountain, no more adventures in the clothes dryer. This was goodbye…But not if He-Man had anything say about it!

“By the power of Greyskull,” he shouted, barreling towards Ken.

“Go, He-Man! Go!” called Barbie, jumping up and down, clapping gleefully.  In a blinding flash of steel and rippled pectorals, Ken’s head rolled along the ground finally stopping at Barbie’s feet.

It was the late-80s and a young Meghan Stratman could be found indulging in the delights of an overactive imagination.

Take Part in the Book Fair Benefit for the Lux Nov. 15th

LUX Center for the Arts is hosting a fundraiser at Barnes and Noble, 5150 O St on Sunday, November 15 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.  A portion of Barnes and Noble and coffee shop purchases from LUX Center supporters will be donated to LUX Center for the Arts to buy supplies and equipment for classrooms and studios. 

In order for the LUX Center to receive their donation, supporters must mention the LUX Center or give a voucher to the Barnes and Noble cashier before their purchase.  To download a voucher, go to www.luxcenter.org.

Shaolin Warriors Bring Physical, Mental Prowess, Kung Fu Mastery to Lied

Performed by disciples of the Shaolin schools, known throughout the world for their disciplined and deadly martial-arts prowess, these Chinese kung fu masters have trained daily from a very young age in mental and physical disciplines, which allow them to perform feats once thought only possible in the movies. Breathing life into 1,500-year-old rituals, this group of 20 adult men and two young boys showcases extreme physical ability, weapon proficiency and unmatched ensemble synchronization.
