Lincoln Municipal Band to present "March Madness" July 31

Bob KruegerThe Lincoln Municipal Band will continue its 2011 Summer Concert Series on Sunday, July 31, 2011 at 7:00 p.m., with a concert entitled "March Madness." This concert, conducted by Bob Krueger, will feature marches by Henry Fillmore, Karl King and John Philip Sousa.

In addition the band will perform Percy Grainger's "Children's March" and Victor Herbert's "Naughty Marietta Overture." Bring a picnic dinner and enjoy a beautiful evening of music, family, and friends! The Lincoln Municipal Band will also be joined by trumpet soloist Dean Haist, trumpet professor at Nebraska Wesleyan University. He will be performing "Trumpeter's Lullaby" and "At the Beach." 

All Lincoln Municipal Band concerts are held at the John Shildneck Memorial Bandshell in Antelope Park and are FREE and open to the public.

Film screening: Nebraska Wesleyan University's International Film Festival presents "Micmacs a tire-larigot": First it was a mine that exploded in the middle of the Moroccan desert. Years later, it was a stray bullet that lodged in his brain. Bazil doesn't have much luck with weapons. Released from a hospital after an accident, Bazil is homeless. Luckily, he is quickly taken in by a motley crew of junkyard dealers living in a veritable Ali Baba's cave. One day Bazil recognizes the logos of the weapons manufacturers that have caused him misfortune and he sets out to take revenge.

IndiZOO: Monthly interactive storytime that allows children to learn about animals face-to-face. For February, Sweetie the Turtle from the Pioneers Park Nature Center will be featured, as we explore turtles with a chance to ask questions. After the presentation, the children will hear three stories as well as make a turtle-themed craft before they leave. Presented by representatives from the Pioneers Park Nature Center and the Lincoln Children's Zoo.

Book talk: "All Things Neil Gaiman": Never read anything by him before? Sarah from Gere will tell you why you should!

Double Reed Day concert: Double Reed Days kicks off with the concert featuring guest clinicians Charles "Chip" Hamann and Jeffrey Lyman with faculty artists William McMullen and Jeffrey McCray.

Concert: Daniel Christian is a Nebraskan singer-songwriter who blends pop/rock sensibilities with country/folk roots. He weaves hooky, stick-in-your-head melodies backed by big harmonies with thought-provoking lyrical content. The result is an entertainment style that audiences have dubbed organic "thought rock," which, according to fans, "sounds like cinnamon rolls taste!" So of course we will serve delicious cinnamon rolls from Thé Cup for everyone to enjoy that night.

Handel's Messiah: Union College’s Division of Fine Arts will present part one of George Frederic Handel’s Messiah for its annual Christmas concert.
