"If you come to see Sunny Adé live, you must be prepared to groove all night." --Trey Anastasio of Phish
In what is sure to be a memorable event in the history of live music in Lincoln, King Sunny Adé and His African Beats is poised to bring a dazzling display of culture when they visit town April 18, 2010 for a show at the Bourbon Theatre, 1415 O St. with local openers Son Del Llano.
Thirty years into an impressive career that has seen Adé honored with titles like “Chairman of the Board” and “Minister of Enjoyment” in his home country of Nigeria, he is bringing his band overseas for a rare trip to American soil. Adé, labeled as a composer, bandleader, singer, guitarist and entrepreneur, pioneered a style of music known as juju, described by the Boston Globe as “mellow, shimmering, large-band party music.” It emerged in the 1970s from a combination of Yoruba drumming with elements of West African highlife music, calypso, and jazz.
Adé was the first African to be nominated twice for a Grammy Award, first for his 1983 album “Synchro System” and again in 1998 for “Odu,” a collection of traditional Yoruba songs. In July 2009 he was inducted into the Afropop Hall of Fame. To date he has released 123 music albums.
This event is a fundraiser for KZUM, a non-profit radio station in Lincoln, NE. The show was made possible by Star City Blog with generous support from the Berman Music Foundation, Southeast Community College, Dietze Music, U.S. Bank, The Holiday Inn Downtown, the Parthenon Greek Taverna and Grill and the Bourbon Theatre. Net proceeds will be donated to KZUM.
Tickets will go on sale January 11th. General Admission is $25 per person. Reserved Seats are available for $50 per person. Discounts are available for groups of five or more.
